Sydney Opera House Illuminated with Menorah After Bondi Beach Attack
Written by Chantal Gapato | December 16, 2025
The Sydney Opera House was lighted in Monday night with a giant menorah to honor the 15 people killed in a deadly antisemitic attack at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach the previous day. The projection, displayed on the hall’s largest sail, was requested by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns as a message of solidarity with the Jewish community.
The attack occurred during a Chabad Hanukkah gathering, when two gunmen opened fire, leaving 15 dead and at least 40 injured. Authorities have said the attackers acted independently and were motivated by antisemitic ideology.
Across the city, vigils and memorials were held to honor the victims. At Bondi, more than 1,000 people gathered around a large menorah near the Bondi Pavilion, where hundreds of bouquets were placed. Rabbi Yossi Shuchat lit candles for the second night of Hanukkah, speaking about the enduring power of light in the face of darkness.
Interfaith ceremonies also took place in Sydney’s Hyde Park, bringing together community members, religious leaders, and representatives from the Jewish Council of Australia and the Australian Imams Council. Speakers emphasized messages of unity and shared humanity, highlighting support from faith and community groups across the country.
In Melbourne, the Caulfield Shule synagogue was filled, with roughly 2,000 attendees coming together to mourn the victims and stand in solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community.
Premier Minns described the menorah projection as “a simple but powerful gesture,” symbolizing resilience and support for the Jewish community. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that authorities are treating the attack as the work of individuals acting alone and reaffirmed that it was motivated by antisemitism.
The menorah on the Sydney Opera House and the nationwide vigils are among the first acts of public remembrance following the tragedy, sending a clear message that communities across Australia are standing together in solidarity with those affected.
