$250K Grancino Violin and Two Bows Stolen from Train in the Netherlands
Written by Chantal Gapato | November 9, 2025
A Giovanni Grancino violin from 1690, estimated to be worth around $250,000, has been reported stolen while traveling on a train from The Hague to Breda in the Netherlands on Saturday, November 1. The incident likely took place between 8 and 9 p.m., possibly during the stop at Holland Spoor Station.
The stolen instrument and two Eitan Hoffer bows were kept inside a triangular blue case belonging to Ryo Terakado, the Japanese violinist and conductor known for his expertise in historically informed performance and his teaching at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. The violin, labeled “Hieronimus Amati 1690,” is a rare historical piece that has featured in several of Terakado’s performances.

Luthier Dmitry Badiarov, who had worked on the violin earlier this year, has taken to social media to spread the word and request assistance in recovering the instrument.
