Renowned opera singer Jubilant Sykes, a Grammy nominee with a decades-long international career, was found dead Monday night inside his family’s home in Santa Monica, authorities confirmed. He was 71.

Prosecutors have charged Micah Sykes, 31, the singer’s son, with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing. He appeared briefly in court on Thursday, where a judge ordered that he be held without bail. His arraignment has been postponed until February 11 at the request of the defense. A judge also issued a protective order prohibiting him from contacting his mother.

In court, prosecutors said the victim’s wife witnessed the attack. They also stated that the defendant has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and may not have been properly following medical treatment. It was further noted that he lacked stable housing and had been staying at his parents’ residence. Family members present in court asked that it be conveyed that they continue to love him.

Police responded to a report of an assault at a residence on Delaware Avenue around 9:20 p.m. Officers found Jubilant Sykes with critical stab wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene. Micah Sykes was taken into custody inside the home without incident.

Jubilant Sykes was widely respected in the classical music world, having performed at major venues across the globe, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. He was also known for his strong commitment to community work throughout his career.
