World-Class Pianist Kate Liu to Perform in Manila in May 2026
Written by Joseph John L. Verallo | December 24, 2025
In October 2015, the pianist Kate Liu won the hearts of the public with her playing at the 17th International Chopin Competition, as evidenced by the fact that she received the Polish Radio Award for Audience Favorite Prize, alongside her bronze medal. This May 2, 2026, Liu will perform at the Ayala Museum in Makati City as a production of Veniccio.com, in partnership with MCO Foundation and Cultural Arts Events Organizer.
Born in Singapore, Kate Liu displayed immense talent on the piano at a young age, being admitted to the gifted music program of the Yamaha Music School before moving to the US to study at the Music Institute of Chicago. She boasts a bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute of Music and master’s and artist diploma from the Juilliard School.
Both in performances and interviews, Liu expressed admiration for the spirit of romanticism, something quite noticeable in her artistry. During the 17th Chopin Competition, she brought a notably deep sensitivity to the piano, so much so that former gold medalist Garrick Ohlsson stated when commenting on her playing, “I was in a dream state the whole time.”
In an episode of The Chopin Podcast, Ohlsson described Liu’s rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 62, No. 1 as “probably the best performance of that piece I’d ever heard live.” Liu was also the recipient of the Polish National Radio awards for the Best Mazurka Prize.
Her sound has reached such prestigious recital halls as the Warsaw National Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and many others. Other than her live performances, she also released her debut recording album earlier this 2025, featuring piano sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms.
This 2026, Liu will make her debut here in the Philippines in Makati, performing Chopin’s Mazurkas, Op. 30 and Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35, Schumann’s Arabesque in C, Op. 18, and Brahms’ Piano Sonata No. 1 in C, Op. 1.
